OpenAI discontinues video generation platform to prioritize productivity, robotics, and competition with Anthropic
OpenAI has decided to discontinue Sora, its AI-powered video generation platform, including the consumer app, developer version, and its integration within ChatGPT.
The information was reported by The Wall Street Journal and signals a major shift in the company’s strategy.
🧠 Focus Shifts to AI Agents and Productivity
According to CEO Sam Altman and Head of Applications Fidji Simo, the move aims to concentrate efforts on more strategic areas such as productivity tools, enterprise solutions, and coding.
The main goal is to develop AI agents capable of performing tasks autonomously, one of the company’s biggest bets moving forward.
To support this shift, teams and infrastructure have been redirected toward robotics and world simulation research.
⚡ High Costs and Uncertain Demand
Another key factor behind the decision is the high operational cost of Sora. Generating realistic AI videos requires massive computational power, consuming significant energy and hardware resources.
Internally, there were also concerns about demand, reinforcing the perception that the investment might not deliver sufficient returns.
As a result, OpenAI chose to allocate resources to initiatives with greater strategic value.
🎬 Partners and Employees Caught Off Guard
The decision reportedly surprised both partners and employees. Just one day before the news, teams from Disney had met with OpenAI to discuss a potential partnership involving over 200 characters from franchises like Star Wars and Toy Story.
Inside the company, employees were also caught off guard, especially since OpenAI had recently published content highlighting Sora’s safety features.
⚖️ Copyright Challenges Also Played a Role
Since its launch, Sora has faced ongoing copyright concerns, forcing the company to implement restrictions to prevent misuse of protected content.
These challenges added complexity to the platform and contributed to the decision to shut it down.
📱 Gradual Phase-Out as “Super App” Expands
OpenAI has not yet announced an exact timeline for removing Sora’s video features from ChatGPT. However, the phase-out process has already begun.
The company is currently working on a “super app” that integrates desktop, browser, and tools like Codex, with video functionality expected to be removed gradually as this ecosystem evolves.
